Join Southwest High School Robotics
FIRST Robotics is a really fun way for you to get involved on a school team, build your leadership and technical skills, and learn more about Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). We welcome students of all levels who want to contribute to our team robot and promoting STEM in the school and community.
“According to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), of the eight million students who participate in high school athletics in the United States, less than 6 percent will compete at a collegiate level, and of that group, only a fraction will realize their goals of becoming professional athletes. In comparison, FIRST participants are two times as likely to major in science or engineering, and 89.6 percent of FIRST Alumni are currently in a STEM field as a student or a professional.” ~ FIRST
Natalie Kalin, an engineering student in Colorado who participated in FIRST recently wrote this great must-read piece outlining 5 reasons teenagers should join FIRST.
Don’t know anything about robots or engineering?
That’s ok! We have student leaders and mentors who will help you learn and grow – and pretty soon you will be the one teaching other new members. If you like the idea of metal cutting, solving problems, working with wood, designing 3D models, and working as a team we can use your help.
We’re also looking for artists, photographers, writers and people who might like giving presentations, helping to document team activities, maintaining our social media presence, keeping our website updated, reaching out to corporate sponsors and other outreach and fundraising efforts!
Wondering about the time commitment?
The build season can get a little intimidating for scheduling, but there are many ways you might be able to contribute. If it’s your schedule holding you back, contact us to see how you might be able to to be involved. If you have a very specific interest – don’t hold back – contact us and tell us how you would like to help.
We meet all year with intense practice sessions during build season (only 6 weeks from January – mid-February) after school (usually 3-5 pm). During the 6-week build season we usually meet after school as we usually do, but we also usually meet late (until about 8 pm) on Fridays and all day on Saturdays and school release days.
See our Event Calendar for meeting times.
